Common Causes of Dizziness and Vertigo

Dealing with constant or intermittent episodes of dizziness can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be a mystery. There are options to correct or improve your symptoms. Some common causes of dizziness include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular hypofunction, cervical dizziness, and vestibular migraine. Each of these conditions has its own treatment to help reduce associated dizziness.

Less common issues like acoustic neuroma, Meniere’s disease, and central dizziness can also cause dizziness.

The most common cause of vertigo worldwide is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This condition is often described as brief, sudden, and intense dizziness associated with head movement. Episodes tend to be brief but can be repeated throughout your day whenever your head gets into a triggering position. This condition is treated by a specialized physical therapist using repositioning maneuvers and often can be corrected in just 1-2 sessions.

Another common cause of dizziness and vertigo is inner ear inflammation. With this condition, sudden intense vertigo/dizziness can last for several hours to days. In addition, nausea, vomiting, and imbalance may be present. Treatment includes medication, balance training, and vestibular rehab exercises to reduce or eliminate sensations of dizziness.

Migranainous vertigo or dizziness caused by migraines can be severely debilitating as symptoms are triggered typically in combination with headache or migraine. People suffering from this will benefit from medication, balance training, and other manual treatments to reduce potential causes of migraines and to address associated impairments.

Cervicogenic disease is a condition that is caused by inflammation, joint restriction, and degenerative changes to the cervical spine. Symptoms can be provoked by neck motion and increase as stiffness and muscle tension worsen. Individuals will often report limited motion, pain, dizziness, or balance issues.
